How to choose a marketing agency in West Yorkshire

What to ask, what the answers should sound like, and the four things that predict whether an agency relationship will work.

Choosing an agency is difficult because the thing you are buying does not exist yet, and the people selling it are, by definition, good at selling. Here is what we have found actually predicts whether the relationship works.

Ask who does the work

The single most useful question is: will the people in this room be the people doing the work? In smaller West Yorkshire agencies the answer is usually yes, and that is much of the reason to use one. In larger agencies the pitch team and the delivery team are frequently different, and nobody will volunteer that.

Ask for the names, the hours, and what happens when the person assigned to you is on holiday or leaves.

Ask for a client who left

Every agency has case studies. Far fewer will give you the number of a client who ended the relationship. The ones who will are usually the ones worth hiring, and the conversation tells you more than three references from happy clients.

Check their own visibility

An agency selling search that does not rank, or selling content that publishes nothing, is asking you to accept a claim it has not tested on itself. This is not a perfect signal — some good agencies are busy enough not to bother — but the ones who do market themselves well have at least demonstrated the discipline.

Read the contract before the proposal

Contract length, notice period, and what happens to your accounts, ad accounts, analytics and website when you leave. These four points cause almost every serious agency dispute we have seen, and all four are settled before you sign or not at all.

You should own your own Google Ads account, your own analytics property, your own domain and your own hosting. An agency that holds these on your behalf is not necessarily acting badly, but you are much harder to lose, and that changes the incentives.

What good looks like month to month

A useful monthly report says what was done, what it cost, what moved in the numbers that lead to revenue, and what happens next. If a report is built from impressions, reach and follower counts, ask what any of those did for enquiries. The answer is the test, not the numbers.
