West YorkshireBusiness Guide

Tell us what you need.

Write it the way you would say it out loud — the job, and the town if it matters. The Guide will work out which of its 36 sectors you are in and hand you the ranked list, with the businesses nearest you first.

Everything the Guide can answer

The 36 sectors covered so far. Beside each one is the business currently at the top of its list, and how many the list holds. Ask the finder for any of them, or go straight to the list.

How the finder works

How does the finder decide what to recommend?

It reads your words for two things: what you need and where you need it. The need is matched against the 36 sectors the Guide publishes, using the words buyers actually type — a rewire, an EICR, a fuse board all point at commercial electricians. The place is matched against the 20 towns and the address of every business listed. It then hands back the Guide's own ranked list for that sector, put in your area first. It does not score businesses itself and it cannot invent one: everything it shows was researched and ranked before you asked.

Can a business pay to come out top of the finder?

No. The finder returns the published ranked list in its published order, and that order is editorial. A business cannot buy a position in a ranking, so it cannot buy a position here either. If you name a town, businesses in that town come first — that is the only thing that reorders the list, and the page says so when it happens.

What happens if the Guide has nobody in my town?

It says so, and gives you the West Yorkshire list instead. Coverage is deepest in Calderdale and Kirklees and thinner elsewhere, so a blank in your town usually means the Guide has not researched it yet rather than that nobody good works there.

Does it work for anything other than business services?

Not yet. The Guide covers 36 sectors of business-to-business and trade services across West Yorkshire, and consumer categories such as restaurants, shops and leisure are not part of it. If the finder cannot place what you asked for, it will tell you rather than guess.
